9-18-2007 Pat & Mike www.el-lobo.co.uk GB Reply to David Grant re insurance Sorry to have taken so long to reply. We have had computer problems. We are insured with Yachtmasters Insurance here in the UK. They are the only company we found that would give us comprehensive insurance. They usually ask that the boat is professionally built (ours wasn't) but we luckily had photographs and documentation of the build overseen by the British Cement Company (no longer in existence) so with a recent full survey they have insured us. I think they only insure British registered boats but they may be able to put you in touch with some similar insurers in Canada. Good luck. Cheers Pat & Mike

1-20-2008 frank farrell n/a London GB read with interest article in Junk Rig Newsletter 49. I am planning to build a mast a similar way for the hull I am fitting out. I'm wondering if I should reinforce the mast with an internal aluminium sleeve in the region of the partners. Was this done when you built your masts?
1-24-2008 Mike ES Reply to Frank Farrell. Hi Frank, Thanks for your email regarding your mast. In answer to your query, whether or not you sleeve your mast depends on how you build it and the quality of the aluminium that the tube is made of. Generally I would say that there is no necessity to reinforce the mast at the partner provided the material is of sufficient quality, in fact by reinforcing the mast at the position of the partners could do more harm than good as it could create a ‘hard spot’ and therefore reducing the flexibility in that area. This could not only create problems for the mast itself but could also create extra stresses to the deck area in the vicinity of the partners. It is essential for the masts to flex freely If you have a good quality aluminium then it shouldn’t be necessary to reinforce the mast. More important would be to ensure as much area to the partners as possible give a greater bearing area to the mast itself. On our masts we used softwood packers about eighteen inches long which gives a good bearing area and allows the mast to flex freely. Having said all that we sleeved our masts, but basically this was because we couldn’t obtain the tubes long enough to form the entire mast. I feel that we now have better masts as they do in fact have a stepped taper (if there is such a thing!). So there is a little less weight aloft and also less windage. I hope this helps and wish you all the best for your project. Should you have any further query please contact me and I will try my best to help. Please also understand that I may not always be able to respond quickly depending on where we are and internet access availability. Good luck Mike.

8-24-2008 jose r vigil Miami, Fl, US Hello We are in Marina Smir and heading south our plan is to visit marrakech but it seems casablanca Marina is not open, so our alternative is Sale. My questions are Do you think a 53 footer fits in this marina? my draught is 8 feet has the Marina security> We plan to leave the yacht while visiting Marrakech for a few days? Thanks for your help jose SY ZEN
8-30-2008 Mike ES Reply to Jose Hello Jose, Thanks for your mail. You will find a good reception at Salé/Rabat marina. The security is first class and your boat will be perfectly safe there while you visit Marrakech. The pontoons are big enough for your boat. There are hammerheads on the pontoons and there were plenty of spaces when we were there. The hotel we stayed at in Marrakesh, the Morroccan House, is good value in a nice part of the city. Follow the link on our June page to book if you wish. Enjoy your time in Morocco. Regards. Mike and Pat.

1-19-2009 Lori East Grinstead GB A heartfelt message to wish you both ‘Bon Voyage’ as you sail from Cape Verdi to ‘The Beautiful Winward Islands’ like so many sailors before you. I am bitterly disappointed, that home circumstances have prevented me from joining you on this, wonderful and monumental trip aboard ‘El Lobo’ to ‘The New World’ God Speed, Fair Winds, and Sunny skies. Stay Safe, and my thoughts are with you, every step of the beautiful way. Internet access is no problem on Barbados, and I’m sure if you have any problems, then Martin will sort you out, give him my very best regards when you see ‘that scruffy little Bajan guy’ Will look forward to joining you later in the Caribbean. All our love, and thoughts. Lori & Clive xxxxxx
1-23-2009 Jayne Barnard Calgary, Alberta, CA My husband met you in Sao Vincente and sent me your link. He is on the Picton Castle, and said you are setting out for Bermuda. From your map, that is your longest passage to date. I wish you fair winds and a safe harbour at the end of it. Jayne

Hope life is a little smoother for you when you cross the Atlantic. Been reading the little 30 foot yacht's adventures who were next to us in Santa Cruz S/Y Brimble, with the two kids. They have made it over to Barbados but had quite a rough crossing.Take care Barbs and Chris PS Knee just beginning to repair!!!!! How's yours Mike?

3-3-2009 carl hall O HIO, US Happy you had a trip not too bad...
3-4-2009 Norman Wardropper Sunderland US Congratulations on reaching the other side of the 'pond'. We are enjoying all of your reports. Best wishes to you both. Safe journey onwards.
3-5-2009 ruth herman sydney, new south wales, AU just a quick note to say thanks not only for all the great jokes but also for your latest warts and all account of your crossing. Seems this January has been one of the toughest crossing periods for a long time - almost every boat we've met who came over at the same time has had some damaged or broken gear (not to mention those whom you probably heard about who had a jammed rudder post and had a 40 day drift towards the Bahamas before they were rescued). We ourselves broke a block on the steering system and had to jury rig it for half the distance. Your toughness, practicality and tenacity in completing the passage was great and we really admire you for it. best wishes Ruth & Pete
3-13-2009 barbara cheetham US Hi,Pat and Mike.I'm up and running with internet again so should be able to keep in touch properly!!! All is well and looking forward to the golf season. Very tame compared with your adventures. Be in touch again.

3-19-2009 Barb and Con www.sailbigsky.com calgary, AB, CA Hi Mike and Pat, we met in Cascais the fall of 2007 I think. MAN! how time flies. I had your website in my favorites, checked it today and read your bad-luck story about the Atlantic crossing. We're held up in Canada for another month before we're able to set sail again. Thanks for the enjoyable read!
3-21-2009 Chris and Barbs Fawcett Middlesbrough, Cleveland, GB Hi Pat and Mike, hope you have the boat sorted now. We had similar problems with the bottom bracket of our Hydrovane. The bolts had worn oval holes so on our return journey to Europe we bought stainless steel in the Azores and cut two plates, one for nthe inside and the other for the outside of the hull and withn epoxy and filler we managed to make a strong job. No probs since touch wood. Barbs and Chris
4-5-2009 Barbara US HiaandMike again, Pat and Mike. Obviously you're having fun in the Windies. What's all this expertise in bird recognition? I've just had a week on Costa del Sol....adventure enough for you land-lubber chum. good weather here, excellent for golf. All the best.
4-7-2009 john john@pearson6060.freeserve.co.uk carlisle GB Hi Mike.... Hope you remember me from Story Construction in Carlisle. I have just come across your El-Lobo business card in my desk, and am a bit disapointed in my self that I had forgoten about your "small" adventure. I needn,t ask how it's going as I can see from your Web Page's that you are in Barbados, so you must be doing something right. I hope the remainder of your journey go's to plan, and I promise I will look in on you more often. Things have changed slightly since we last met, Story have opened a branch in Newcastle, of which I am Regional Manager. Things are very tight at the moment, with not a lot of work about. Makes me wish I was going round the world actually !! Keep up the good work, will keep in touch. Cheers JP
